Mairín ordered this 2-tier cake for her niece’s Christening in Co. Down. I covered the cake in pale pink sugarpaste and handmade a little pair of pink Mary Jane baby shoes.  I bought the template for these shoes from Jo Ranson in the UK - she is raising money for Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital http://the-icing-on-the-cake.blogspot.com/2010/08/mary-jane-template-mary-jane-template-2.html  They are beautiful little shoes, and in aid of a very good cause too!

Baby Niamh’s grandparents have a little white dog that she loves, so I made a little version of him, along with some pawprints winding their way up the cake! I then made loads of tiny little flowers which I dotted around the cake. Mairín also wanted “Welcome” to be written on the board in Irish, English and Welsh – as you can see in the photo, I have put “Fáilte Welcome Croeso” – with each word separated by a tiny flower.

The cake itself was a 7″ vanilla sponge, on top of a 9″ vanilla sponge, triple layered with vanilla buttercream and strawberry jam. Both tiers were covered with vanilla buttercream and sugarpaste.
