Stripey hatbox cake

  Stripey_hatbox_cake

I made this cake for my mother-in-law’s birthday.  I coloured some sugarpaste a lovely lilac colour, as it is her favourite colour.  I measured the circumference of the cake and then cut out strips of both white and lilac sugarpaste to fit evenly.  The cake is topped off with a lovely handmade bow made from modelling paste.  The original design is from Planet Cake.

The cake itself was a 7-inch chocolate sponge, filled with chocolate ganache and covered with chocolate ganache and sugarpaste.

Raa Raa the Noisy Lion

Karen in Lucan ordered this cake for her son Tom’s first birthday.  I had made Tom’s Christening cake and his older sister Amelia’s birthday cake too – it’s lovely to have repeat customers!

Little Tom loves watching Raa Raa the Noisy Lion on CBeebies.  In order to be able to make the little model correctly, I had to watch a couple of episodes and ended up singing the theme tune in my head for about a month!!  I carved a square cake into the number “1″ and then made little Raa Raa and his cubby buggy with its watermelon wheels from modelling paste.

Below is a closeup of Raa Raa in his cubby buggy.

Vintage Birdcage

I made this cake at a class taught by the wonderful Gráinne MacClancy of www.acakeforyou.ie.  I absolutely adore this cake – I think it would be a fantastic cake for an intimate wedding, or for a very special birthday.  It was 3 small cakes (6″ and 7″) stacked on top of each other, carved into the correct shape and covered with sugarpaste.  Then I piped on the cage “bars” with royal icing and decorated it with birds and flowers.

Someone please order a cake like this from me, as I am dying to make it again ;)

Hearts and blossoms

I made this cake for my friend’s parents on their wedding anniversary.   It’s quite a simple cake, but very effective, I think.  I filled a heart-shaped chocolate sponge cake with chocolate ganache, and then covered it with chocolate ganache and sugarpaste.  I handmade some sugar hydrangea blossoms and scattered them over the top of the cake.  Beautiful!

This is a very versatile cake design – it would make a beautiful cake for an engagement, small wedding, anniversary or any love-themed celebration really!

Ribbons & swirls

Patrick from Leixlip ordered this cake.  He and his wife were having a 25th Wedding Anniversary party.  It was quite a large cake – a 12″ fruit cake bottom tier and an 8″ fruit cake top tier.  I covered both tiers in marzipan and ivory sugarpaste.  I made the ribbons on top from flower paste and decorated them with edible glitter.  The numbers “25″ are also made from flower paste, and painted with edible silver paint.  I piped the swirls and dots with royal icing and finished the cake with silver dragees down the sides.
